Empowers women to make informed decisions about autoimmune disorders More than 50 million Americans, most of them women, suffer from a constellation of mysterious, often misdiagnosed diseases that can result in disability, disfigurement, and death. Called "autoimmune diseases," they arise when the immune system attacks healthy tissues in almost any area of the body, and include lupus rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn's disease, scleroderma, and Graves' disease. Now Jill Buyon, a doctor working on the cutting edge of research into these diseases, and Rita Baron-Faust, an award-winning medical journalist, arm women with the knowledge they need to obtain accurate diagnoses and the best possible treatments. In The Autoimmune Connection readers learn about the recent groundbreaking discovery of the links between the different autoimmune diseases and why women are more likely to develop them. The authors offer the most up-to-date information on diagnosis, treatments, and risks for women with one or more autoimmune disease.

Adherence To Long Term Therapies from the Author: Eduardo Sabaté. Medicines can only be effective if patients follow the prescribed course of treatment, yet in developed countries only half of patients with chronic diseases adhere to treatment recommendations. Combined with other factors such as limited access to health care and medicines, this issue has serious consequences for health outcomes and economics. This report reviews the published literature on definitions, measurements, epidemiology, economics and interventions relating to the following nine chronic conditions and risk factors: asthma, palliative cancer care; depression, diabetes, epilepsy, HIV/AIDS, hypertension, smoking and tuberculosis. It also discusses policy developments and options available for improving adherence to long-term therapies.

Working To Overcome The Global Impact Of Neglected Tropical Diseases from the Author: World Health Organization. "Neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) blight the lives of a billion people worldwide and threaten the health of millions more. These ancient companions of poverty weaken impoverished populations, frustrate the achievement of health in the Millennium Development Goals and impede global health and economies has convinced governments, donors, the pharmaceutical industry and other agencies, including nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), to invest in preventing and controlling this diverse group of diseases. Global efforts to control "hidden" diseases, such as dracunculiasis (guinea-worm disease), leprosy, gains including the imminent eradication of dracunculiasis. Since 1989 (when most endemic countries began reporting monthly from each endemic village), the number of new dracunculiasis cases has fallen from 892 055 in 12 endemic countries to 3190 in 4 countries in 2009, a decrease of more than 99%. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends five public-health strategies for the prevention and control of NTDs: preventive chemotherapy; intensified case-management; vector control; the provision of safe water, sanitation and hygiene; and veterinary public health (that is, applying veterinary sciences to ensure the health and well-being of humans). Although one approach and delivered locally." - p. vii

Measuring Health from the Author: Ian McDowell. Worldwide economic constraints on health care systems have highlighted the importance of evidence-based medicine and evidence-based health policy. The resulting clinical trials and health services research studies require instruments to monitor the outcomes of care and the output of the health system. However, the over-abundance of competing measurement scales can make choosing a measure difficult at best. Measuring Health provides in-depth reviews of over 100 of the leading health measurement tools and serves as a guide for choosing among them.LNow in its third edition, this book provides a critical overview of the field of health measurement, with a technical introduction and discussion of the history and future directions for the field. This latest edition updates the information on each of the measures previously reviewed, and includes a complete new chapter on anxiety measurement to accompany the one on depression. It has also added new instruments to those previously reviewed in each of the chapters in the book.LChapters cover measurements of physical disability, social health, psychological well-being, anxiety, depression, mental status testing, pain, general health status and quality of life. Each chapter presents a tabular comparison of the quality of the instruments reviewed, followed by a detailed description of each method, covering its purpose and conceptual basis, its reliability and validity and, where possible, shows a copy of the actual scale. To ensure accuracy of the information, each review has been approved by the original author of each instrument or by an acknowledged expert.
