Teaching Translation From Spanish To English from the Author: Allison Beeby Lonsdale. While many professional translators believe the ability to translate is a gift that one either has or does not have, Allison Beeby Lonsdale questions this view. In her innovative book, she demonstrates how teachers can guide their students by showing them how insights from communication theory, discourse analysis, pragmatics, and semiotics can illuminate the translation process. Using Spanish to English translation as her example, she presents the basic principles of translation through 29 teaching units, which are prefaced by objectives, tasks, and commentaries for the teacher, and through 48 task sheets, which show how to present the material to students.

Translation Quality Assessment from the Author: Juliane House. Translation Quality Assessment has become one of the key issues in translation studies. This comprehensive and up-to-date treatment of translation evaluation makes explicit the grounds of judging the worth of a translation and emphasizes that translation is, at its core, a linguistic art. Written by the author of the worldÔÇÖs best known model of translation quality assessment, Juliane House provides an overview of relevant contemporary interdisciplinary research on intercultural communication and globalization research, corpus and psycho- and neurolinguistic studies. House also acknowledges the importance of socio-cultural and situational context in which texts are embedded, and which need to be analysed when they are transferred through space and time in acts of translation but also highlights the linguistic art form of translation. The text includes a newly revised and presented model of translation quality assessment which, like its predecessor, relies on detailed textual and culturally informed contextual analysis and comparison. The test cases also show that there are two steps in translation evaluation: firstly analysis, description and explanation; secondly, judgements of value, socio-cultural relevance and appropriateness. The second is futile without the first: to judge is easy, to understand less so. Translation Quality Assessment is an invaluable resource for students and researchers of Translation Studies and Intercultural Communication, as well as for professional translators.

Symbolism Synesthesia And Semiotics Multidisciplinary Approach from the Author: Bonaventure Balla. Have you ever heard about symbols and sounds or music inherently associated with colors? Have you ever heard about people who always dream in color, see sounds or hear colors, odors, and who cannot dissociate days of week, months, numbers and letters from specific colors? This phenomenon is real and called synesthesia. It can be literary, scientific, and/or cognitive. It is analyzed within the framework of symbolism and neuroscience. It takes place in the left hemisphere of the human brain and the neo-cortex. It is activated by the limbic system and the tangling of two or more synapses. In this book, I aspire to reflect on this phenomenon under the auspices of symbolism and neuroscience. However, I will emphasize the literary aspect of synesthesia (synesthesia as a metaphor) while pondering on symbolism as a general trend along with its scientific and cognitive aspects.

Language Origin A Multidisciplinary Approach from the Author: Jan Wind. Language Origin: A Multidisciplinary Approach presents a synthesis of viewpoints and data on linguistic, psychological, anatomical and behavioral studies on living species of Primates and provides a comparative framework for the evaluation of paleoanthropological studies. This double endeavor makes it possible to direct new research on the nature and evolution of human language and cognition. The book is directed to students of linguistics, biology, anthropoloy, anatomy, physiology, neurology, psychology, archeology, paleontology, and other related fields. A better understanding of speech pathology may stem from a better understanding of the relationship of human communication to the evolution of our species. The book is conceived as a timely contribution to such knowledge since it allows, for the first time, a systematic assessment of the origins of human language from a comprehensive array of scientific viewpoints.

Handbook Of Translation Studies from the Author: Yves Gambier. As a meaningful manifestation of how institutionalized the discipline has become, the new Handbook of Translation Studies is most welcome. The HTS aims at disseminating knowledge about translation and interpreting to a relatively broad audience: not only students who often adamantly prefer user-friendliness, researchers and lecturers in Translation Studies, Translation & Interpreting professionals; but also scholars, experts and professionals from other disciplines (among which linguistics, sociology, history, psychology). Moreover, the HTS is the first handbook with this scope in Translation Studies that has both a print edition and an online version. The HTS is variously searchable: by article, by author, by subject. Another benefit is the interconnection with the selection and organization principles of the online Translation Studies Bibliography (TSB). Many items in the reference lists are hyperlinked to the TSB, where the user can find an abstract of a publication. All articles are written by specialists in the different subfields and are peer-reviewed

Bersetzung Translation Traduction 1 Teilband from the Author: Harald Kittel.

A Multidisciplinary Approach To Myelin Diseases from the Author: G. Crescenzi. The present book is based on the papers presented during an inter disciplinary meeting which was held in Rome October 27-30, 1986, at the Istituto Superiore di Sanita under the sponsorship of NATO, and with a financial contribution of the Cassa di Risparmio di Roma. The meeting was of great interest because, for the first time, a group of highly qualified scientists specializing in different fields were gathered together to discuss the problem of demyelinating diseases. In thi. context molecular biologists, immunologists, virologists, and lipid chemists could discuss with clinicians for four days every aspect of demyelinating diseases. They shared results of the more recent research with the hope that more knowledge of the myelinating process will eventually succeed in finding new treatments for these diseases. The meeting was successful, perhaps in part because discussions during lunches and dinners provided an opportunity for the exchange of new ideas. This was apparent in the discussions held after the presen tation of each paper and was summarized in the very lively round table which was held on the last day. The editor wishes to express his thanks to the scientific committee members: N. Baumann, C. Fieschi, G. Macchi, J.M. Matthieu, K. Suzuki. It was their advice that made the choice of participants and subjects so successful. The organizer also acknowledge the organizing support of NATO in preparing these proceedings. Acknowledgments have to be offered to Dr. S. Salvati, Dr. A.M.
