The Yellow Wallpaper from the Author: Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Doctor's orders confine a woman suffering from anxiety and depression to her bedroom, in an effort to prevent mental stimulation of any sort. Despite her forced "rest cure," she continues to write in her journal when her husband isn't looking. Her entries record her terrible and growing fascination with the hideous yellow wallpaper that dominates the room, documenting her slow descent into madness. This work by American author Charlotte Perkins Gilman was based on the author's own experiences. She knew firsthand that the nineteenth-century medical establishment often had dangerously misguided ideas about women's mental and physical health. It is considered to be a seminal feminist work by some, a prime example of Gothic horror by others. First published in 1892, this is an unabridged version of Gilman's controversial short story.

Having the reader decipher a word's meaning within context serves to improve vocabulary retention and understanding. Each page covers words not already highlighted on previous pages. The Yellow Wall Paper Herland And Selected Writings from the Author: Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Wonderfully sardonic and slyly humorous, the writings of landmark American feminist and socialist thinker Charlotte Perkins Gilman were penned in response to her frustrations with the gender-based double standard that prevailed in America as the twentieth century began. Perhaps best known for her chilling depiction of a woman's mental breakdown in her unforgettable 1892 short story 'The Yellow Wall-Paper', Gilman also wrote Herland, a wry novel that imagines a peaceful, progressive country from which men have been absent for 2,000 years. Both are included in this volume, along with a selection of Gilman's major short stories and her poems. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Charlotte Perkins Gilman S The Yellow Wallpaper An Analysis from the Author: Verena Schörkhuber. Seminar paper from the year 2008 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Vienna (Institut fur Anglistik und Amerikanistik), course: Seminar des 2. Studienabschnitts, 40 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: This paper seeks to shed light upon Charlotte Perkins Gilman's short story "The Yellow Wallpaper" (1892) - a text that has become an American feminist classic and has been interpreted as a 'transformed autobiography' (Shulman, xix), as a 'journalistic/clinical account of a woman's gradual descent into madness' (Bak, 39), and in multiple ways as a 'critique of gender relations' (Shulman, xix). It is a 'bitter story', as Ann J. Lane describes it, 'of a young woman driven to insanity by a loving husband-doctor, who, with the purest motives, imposed Mitchell's "rest cure"' (Lane, vii). The narrator of the story is diagnosed as suffering from a 'temporary nervous depression' (W, 4), which is today known as 'postpartum depression', that is, a depression caused by profound hormonal changes after childbirth. Written some five years after the author herself, following the birth of her first child, became 'a mental wreck' in need of a 'rest cure', "The Yellow Wallpaper" is a fictionalized account of Gilman's own subjection to the rest cure of Silas Weir Mitchell, whose mode of treatment so notoriously typified conventional late Victorian doctoring of women ."
