State Of The Adivasis In Odisha 2014 from the Author: Skillshare International India. The State of the Adivasis in Odisha 2014: A Human Development Analysis endeavours to identify and highlight the development concerns of the tribals of the state, explore their causes and provide an opportunity to the state planners in prioritising the human development issues specific to this community. As one of the most excluded communities of India, Adivasis face many challenges in their daily lives: extreme poverty, social exclusion, poor access to healthcare, education and employment opportunities, displacement from their lands and forests and so on. The key objective of this report is to understand these areas of deprivations. It is imperative for the government to ensure food and nutritional security to Adivasis. Efforts should be made for conservation of forests. The tribes need to be provided with hospitals, schools and basic infrastructural facilities. Equal participation of women in project committees at all levels and in training schemes and commercial ventures should be taken to reduce gender inequality. Based on primary and secondary data analysis, this report studies the poor socio-economic condition of the Adivasis and offers possible solutions for empowering the tribal community as a whole.

Alternative Development from the Author: Dr Cathrine Brun. This book brings together a collection of essays that discuss alternative development and its relevance for local/global processes of marginalization and change in the Global South. Alternative development questions who the producers of development knowledges and practices are, and aims at decentring development and geographical knowledge from the Anglo-American centre and the Global North. It involves resistance to dominant political-economic processes in order to further the possibilities for non-exploitative and just forms of development. By discussing how to unravel marginalization and voice change through alternative methods, actors and concepts, the book provides useful guidance on understanding the relationship between theory and practice. The main strength of the book is that it calls for a central role for alternative development in the current development discourse, most notably related to justice, rights, globalization, forced migration, conflict and climate change. The book provides new ways of engaging with alternative development thinking and making development alternatives relevant.

Clear Hold Build Business And Human Rights In India from the Author: Sudeep Chakravarti. Winner, Excellence Award, Best Insights into Asian Societies, Asian Publishing Award 2014 How could a group as respectable as Tata get it so wrong with human rights and community engagement in Kalinga Nagar and Singur? What lessons has it learnt? Why did Vedanta Resources Plc insist on mining in the Niyamgiri Hills in the face of opposition from the tribal inhabitants of the region who fear desecration of their god and losing their land and home? How valid are the safety concerns of the residents of Kudankulam protesting against a nuclear power plant? What gives a global giant like Posco the ability to ride over local sentiments in acquiring land for their mammoth steel plant in Odisha? There is growing discontent over the manner in which governments and businesses in India treat communities and stakeholders. Presumption, arrogance, suspicion and deceit often hold sway over community engagement and holistic human resource development. Disaffection of project-affected communities over issues of land acquisition, resettlement and rehabilitation has emerged as a major threat to economic growth in India, besides adding to the cost of businesses on account of lost opportunities, delays and liability. Driven to the wall, the world of business is finally waking up to the idea of human rights, of true corporate social responsibility. This book offers a must-do checklist for human rights, and for responsible business planning and policy-making. Sudeep Chakravarti speaks to senior executives, policymakers, activists, lawyers and local communities across such conflict zones in India to present a ringside view of the present and future of business and human rights. He breathes fresh understanding into some of the biggest human rights flashpoints in recent years - Vedanta, Tata Steel, Posco, Kudankulam - as well as less visible ones, and numerous forgotten projects, places and people that continue to haunt the development story of twenty-first century India. Clear. Hold. Build. is a groundbreaking work that highlights avoidable battle lines and seeks to change the way government, businesses and communities talk with each other, treat each other and work with each other.
