Recent Advances in Polyphenol Research Volume 2 Edited by Santos-Buelga, Escribano-Bailon and Lattanzio Plant phenolics are secondary metabolites that constitute one of the most common and widespread groups of substances in plants. Polyphenols have a large and diverse array of beneficial effects on both plants and animals. For example they are famous as antioxidants, hormones, constituents of essential oils and natural neurotransmitters. Sponsored by Groupe Polyphenols, this publication, which is the second volume in this ground-breaking series, is edited by Celestino Santos-Buelga, Maria Teresa Escribano-Bailon, and Vincenzo Lattanzio, who have drawn together an impressive list of internationally respected authors, each providing cutting edge chapters covering some of the major topics of recent research and interest. Information included in this important new addition to the series include the following areas: • Flavonoid chemistry of the leguminosae • Chemistry and biological activity of ellagitannins • Chemistry and function of anthocyanins in plants • An update of chemical pathways leading to new phenolic pigments during wine ageing • Metabolic engineering of the flavonoid pathway • The translation of chemical properties of polyphenols into biological activity with impacts in human health • Plant phenolic compounds controlling leaf movement • Biological activity of phenolics in plants Chemists, biochemists, plant scientists, pharmacognosists and pharmacologists, food scientists and nutritionists will all find this book an invaluable resource. Recent Advances In Polyphenol Research from the Author: Stephane Quideau. Plant polyphenols are secondary metabolites that constitute one of the most common and widespread groups of natural products. They express a large and diverse panel of biological activities including beneficial effects on both plants and humans. Many polyphenols, from their structurally simplest representatives to their oligo/polymeric versions (also referred to as condensed tannins), are notably known as phytoestrogens, plant pigments, potent antioxidants, and protein interacting agents. Sponsored by the scholarly society Groupe Polyphénols, this publication, which is the fifth volume in this highly regarded Recent Advances in Polyphenol Research series, is edited by Kumi Yoshida, Véronique Cheynier and Stéphane Quideau. They have once again, like their predecessors, put together an impressive collection of cutting-edge chapters written by expert scientists, internationally respected in their respective field of polyphenol sciences. This Volume 5 highlights some of the latest information and opinion on the following major research topics about polyphenols: • Chemistry, physicochemistry & materials science • Biosynthesis, genetic & metabolic engineering • Plant & ecosystem, lignocellulosic biomass • Food, nutrition & health • Natural medicine & Kampo • Tannins & their functions Chemists, biochemists, plant scientists, pharmacognosists and pharmacologists, biologists, ecologists, food scientists and nutritionists will all find this book an invaluable resource. Libraries in all universities and research institutions where these disciplines are studied and taught should have copies on their bookshelves. About the Editors Kumi Yoshida, current vice-president of the Groupe Polyphénols is professor of Natural Product and Bioorganic Chemistry at Nagoya University, Japan. She specializes in chemical and biological studies on flower coloration by anthocyanins and is also particularly interested in molecular biological and biochemical aspects of metal transporters involved in blue coloration. Her research laboratory also works on the isolation, structural determination and synthesis of various polyphenols. Véronique Cheynier, the current president of the Groupe Polyphénols, is research director at the French National Institute for Agricultural Research (INRA) in Montpellier, France. Her research interests concern the study of the structure of polyphenolic compounds, notably vegetable tannins, and their biosynthesis in plants. She is also interested in the influence of polyphenols, their reactions, and their interactions on the quality of foods and beverages, especially wine. Stéphane Quideau, former president of the Groupe Polyphénols (2008-2012), is full professor of Organic and Bioorganic Chemistry at the University of Bordeaux, France. His research laboratory is specialized in plant polyphenol chemistry and chemical biology, with a focus on the studies of ellagitannin chemical reactivity and synthesis, and interactions of bioactive polyphenols with their protein targets. Recent Advances In Polyphenol Research from the Author: Annalisa Romani. As for previous volumes in the series, this fourth volume has been sponsored by Groupe Polyphenols. The book will be the result of the output from a conference being held in Florence in July 2012. Although there is no conference 'buy-back', Groupe Polyphenols has agreed to pay to Wiley-Blackwell 30 Euros per delegate attending the conference to be put toward production costs. They are expecting between 200 and 300 delegates, so I have included some subsidy towards the book's production in the GBPM costing. The Editors of this book, Veronique Cheynier, Pascale Sarni-Manchado and Stephane Quideau (the current President of Groupe Polyphenols), who are themselves highly regarded in this field, have drawn together an impressive list of internationally-respected authors, each providing cutting edge chapters divided into the following key areas: chemistry and physico-chemistry biosynthesis, genetics and metabolic engineering roles in plants and ecosystems health and nutrition polyphenols and drug discovery Recent Advances in Polyphenols, Volume 4, provides cutting edge, up-to-date reviews of an array of exciting and important aspects of these very important plant secondary metabolites. Plant scientists, biochemists, chemists, pharmacognosists and pharmacologists, food scientists and nutritionists will all find this book an invaluable resource. Libraries in all universities and research establishments where these subjects are studied and taught should all have copies on their shelves.

Bioremediation Technology from the Author: M. H. Fulekar. Environmental pollutants have become a major global concern. The modern growth of industrialization, urbanization, modern agricultural development and energy generation have resulted in indiscriminate exploitation of natural resources for fulfilling the human desires and needs, which have contributed in disturbing the ecological balance on which the quality of environment depends. The modern technological advancements in chemical processes/operations have been raised to new products and also new pollutants in abundant level which are above the self cleaning capacity of the environment. One of the major issues in present times is the threat to human lives, due to the progressive deterioration of the environment. This book discusses bioremediation technology-based remediation to restore contaminated sites and protect the environment. It studies the opportunities for more efficient biological processes in molecular biology and ecology. Notable accomplishments of these studies include the cleaning up of polluted water and contaminated land. The book includes invited papers by eminent contributors who provide cost-effective bioremediation strategies to immobilize contaminants for cleanup of environment. The book is directed towards postgraduate students in biotechnology/life sciences/environmental sciences/biosciences and researchers in universities and research institutes and industries.
