Quarterdeck from the Author: Julian Stockwin. Thomas Kydd was promoted to acting lieutenant at the bloody Battle of Camperdown in October 1797. Now, he must sit an examination to confirm his rank - or face an inglorious return before the mast. But this is only the first of many obstacles for a man who was pressed into the King's Service and discovered a calling for the sea. Kydd is from humble origins, yet he attains the lofty heights of the quarterdeck as an officer in His Majesty's Navy. If he is to avoid spending the rest of his career as a tarpaulin officer, he must also become a gentleman. Kydd and his enigmatic friend Nicholas Renzi set sail in HMS Tenacious for the North American station. Aboard the old 64-gun ship, Kydd comes to doubt he will ever match up to the high-born gentlemen officers. The frontier town of Halifax, which is also home to a British prince of the blood, provides a welcome diversion. Meanwhile, the young United States is in dispute with revolutionary France, the Quasi War, and Kydd finds himself in the USS Constellation in the heady days of the birth of the American Navy. On his return to Halifax, Kydd surmounts more hurdles, both personal and professional - will he ever see himself as truly one of a band of brothers?

Pasha from the Author: Julian Stockwin. Thomas Kydd finds his service in the turquoise waters of the Caribbean abruptly terminated by an admiralty summons to return immediately to England. While the crew of L’Aurore can look forward to liberty and prize money a shadow hangs over Kydd: the impending court martial of Commodore Popham, with whom he was closely involved. However it is not a disciplinary naval board that awaits Kydd but fame and glory as a hero of Curaçao. Kydd returns to sea and has just pulled off a daring reconnaissance into the inner harbour of Cadiz when he is summoned to urgently carry despatches to Admiral Louis in Malta. Word has come from the British ambassador Arbuthnot that the neutral Turks are being wooed by the French; if the ancient city of Constantinople falls into their hands Napoleon’s route to India will be completely unfettered and his plans for world domination a reality. Concerned for his safety, Arbuthnot is demanding a large fleet presence to take him off and bring the Turks to their senses. Unable to find Louis, Kydd decides to force the Dardanelles himself to rescue Arbuthnot, braving treacherous currents, unreliable winds and giant bombards. The ambassador moves his staff aboard L’Aurore, telling Kydd to wait for the show of force he is expecting. Meanwhile, Louis, and later, the rest of the fleet, arrive in Constantinople and an ultimatum is issued to the Sublime Porte to give up the French to the British or surrender the Ottoman navy. Failure to comply will result in bombardment and the total destruction of the ancient and noble city. The consequences of divided command lose them much time and the French are able to strengthen the Turkish defences. Kydd and the others are forced to sail off ignominiously. Meanwhile Kydd’s friend and confidential secretary, Nicholas Renzi, has assumed a new and dangerous role that he can never make public. He engineers a coup in the Topkapi Palace that turns the tables on the French but at the cost of both infidel nations being ejected from the Ottoman Empire. Kydd hears Renzi is incarcerated in a Turkish prison and by superb seamanship and sheer bravado contrives to free his friend and the two are reunited.

Caribbee from the Author: Julian Stockwin. As the captain of a useful frigate, Kydd is claimed by the Leeward Islands station, exchanging the harsh situation in South America for the warmth and delights of the Caribbean. It’s a sea change for Kydd, who revisits places and people that figured in his time as a young seaman. Some are nostalgic and pleasing, while others bring challenges of a personal nature. In Europe, Napoleon is triumphant on land, but so far away in the Caribbean, Kydd and the others feel secure and make the most of running down prizes and sending off fat convoys of sugar to England. But, in a stroke of genius, Bonaparte finds a way to take revenge for Trafalgar and shocks Kydd out of complacency when an element from his past returns and Kydd is accused of murder. In a stroke of irony, it is that same past that may just provide Kydd the means to clear his name.
