Lay Ecclesial Ministry from the Author: Seton Hall University. The role of lay ecclesial ministers—professionally prepared laity who serve in leadership roles—is becoming critically more important in the life of the Catholic church. In Lay Ecclesial Ministry, theologians and pastoral leaders from diverse disciplines provide a deeper understanding, envision future direction, and offer inspiration for these new ministers and the community of the church. Building on the themes of the first official document addressing lay ecclesial ministry, Co-workers in the Vineyard of the Lord, approved by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops in 2005, this book delves deeply into key topics. Authors reflect on dimensions of the Catholic tradition to enrich our understanding of this new reality of lay ministry in the church, to envision future developments, and to offer inspiration. Contributors draw on a variety of theological perspectives, including canon law, church history, ecclesiology, liturgy, and scripture, to ground understanding of lay ecclesial ministry within the Catholic tradition and to chart direction for further response to this newly emergent ministry. The book also offers inspiration and models of service to lay ministers, looking to stories of the saints and communities of vowed religious. Lay Ecclesial Ministry is an essential resource for the Catholic community in understanding and building upon this new and increasingly important component of church life.

One Way Out from the Author: Jim Azzarelli. As a young baby boomer, son of a World War II veteran, grandson of a Sicilian immigrant, and part of a successful family construction business, Jim Azzarelli's future looked bright indeed. But no one could have prepared him for the vast changes he was about to experience. "One Way Out" is one baby boomer's story of living through a time when America experienced tumultuous change. A third generation Italian-American, Azzarelli made it his mission to follow in his family's footsteps and make his own way in the construction business. But the political, social, and cultural upheaval of his generation would greatly impact his future. Azzarelli protested the Vietnam War and narrowly missed being drafted toward the end of the conflict. He bore witness to Woodstock, the Watergate scandal, the Civil Rights movement, and the death of John F. Kennedy. Yet despite such life-altering events, Azzarelli clung to the old world values of his grandfather and his father-the importance of hard work and putting family first. He founded his own construction business in Florida, married, and raised a family of four. Full of wit and wisdom, "One Way Out" brings to life the turbulence of a generation and reveals how one man learned that in planning for the future, one must always consider the past.

Chasing Dreams from the Author: Ernie Tolin. Ernie Tolin had wanted to go to the US Naval Academy. He would not be able to realize that dream. He would pursue a second dream of working with aircraft and being able to work on the National Forest. He gave up a full time job to pursue this dream and would spend the majority or his life working for the US Forest Service. His first assignment was the “Air Attack Unit” at Chino airport. He would be reassigned to an aerial reseeding project on the San Dimas Experimental Forest. He would continue working on research projects and would receive a permanent appointment and work for the “Fuel Break Project”. Ernie would eventually get transferred to the new Forest Fire Laboratory in Riverside California. Helicopter projects, fire fighting, re vegetation and vegetation survey work would keep Ernie busy for a couple of years. Working at the Fire Lab would require analysis of large volumes of data. The only way to do the analysis was to use hand calculators or learn how to use mainframe computers. Ernie became a computer programmer and began writing programs to analyze not only field data but use the technology to dispatch fire equipment and make maps of fuel types for fire simulations. Ernie would be reassigned to Washington DC to work on automated mapping systems. Soon, he would be heading up a technical group of computer specialist. He would help develop specifications for major computer purchases. By the late 1970’s Ernie would head up a group of specialist to analyze data for the Roadless Area Review (RARE II). Ernie would be named as the Director of Computer Science in the California Pacific Island Region and he would move to the San Francisco Bay area. Ernie continued working as the Director of Computer Science & Telecommunications Staff until his retirement.

Good Better Best An Autobiography from the Author: Michael A. Straight. December, 1985 Dear Father, Thank you, Father, for helping me through what has been both a challenge and a struggle. Writing by hand has been difficult for me and for those who have helped me translate my writing to book form. Because of problems with my speech, it has been hard to deal with the many details of editing and printing. Thank you also, Father, for allowing my employment to continue, for helping me to overcome the daily problems of working and living, and for allowing me to find some pleasures, too, even some girls and their love. Thank you for the many friends you have helped me make, in my church and in others, in high school, in college, at work—and for the help they have given me. And finally, thank you for my wonderful family, and for the strength you have given them in helping me survive. Mike Straight’s diary spans seven and one-half years. It is a story of early teens, triumphs in football, tragedy, and striving to become whole again after an automobile accident at age 16. While it was a tremendous blow to be denied his beloved sport of football, he fought his way upward to many accomplishments though confined, for the most part, to a wheelchair. Since his accident he has learned how to drive again, owned several cars, bought (and sold) his own home, gone to three colleges, and has held a manufacturing assembly job for the last several years. Now, in addition to his job, he lifts weights, exercises daily, and goes “dancing.” Mike has had, for him, great success (that most of us enjoy as normal). Yet love has eluded him; not having the true love of a woman returned to him has been his ongoing trial, as his diary will tell you. Only through a deep love for God, and a sometimes wavering and often challenged faith in Him, has Michael sustained his determination to be good, better, best. That he has been able to write and publish this book is a tremendous tribute to both his faith and his determination, as you will see.
