Little Triggers from the Author: Martyn Waites. 'Shaking down the politician hadn't given him the righteous kick he thought it would. Coming home to an empty house, he had opened the bottle, flirted with it, kissed it, made love to it, cried into it and, eventually, killed it.' Stephen Larkin is back in his native Newcastle and working as an agency journalist. To stop himself getting bored, he's fighting greed and corruption in his inimitable way by blackmailing the powers that be into keeping their campaign promises. It doesn't help fill the empty spaces in his life, though. He needs a purpose - which is why he jumps at the chance to track down a child abuser with friends in high places. A cynic like Larkin is automatically suspicious of people like Alan Swanson. A charismatic local chancer and self-styled Minister for Youth, Swanson is the man behind the "Rebirth of the Region" project. But is his interest in kids a chance for a photo-opportunity or something more sinister? Larkin thinks that, as a reporter, he knows all there is to know about the evil that men do. But nothing has prepared him for this... Tough, gutsy, brutal, LITTLE TRIGGERS is a tale of modern city crime

A Little Trigger from the Author: Neil Gaiman. A free digital sampler containing short story 'The Thing About Cassandra' and a preview of Neil Gaiman's new collection, TRIGGER WARNING. Neil Gaiman on 'The Thing About Cassandra' 'When I was about fourteen, it seemed much easier to imagine a girlfriend than to have one - that would involve actually talking to a girl, after all. So I would, I decided, write a girl's name on the cover of my exercise books and deny all knowledge of her when asked, thus, I fondly imagined, causing everyone to think that I actually had a girlfriend. I do not believe it worked. I never actually got around to imagining anything about her but the name.' A LITTLE TRIGGER also includes a preview of TRIGGER WARNING, the new short story collection from Neil Gaiman.

Organizations As Learning Systems from the Author: Marjatta Maula. This book analyzes and interprets the idea of self-production (autopoiesis) in the context of organizations. The main contribution of this book is the living composition, the model of living organizations. It is a new and original interpretation of the theory of living, self-producing systems (autopoiesis theory). Living composition is defined here as strategic components and their relationships. A living organization is thereby a self-producing system that is composed of ten different non-physical strategic components that are continually produced by the organization itself. The components and their relationships are defined so that they enable and facilitate interconnected openness and closure, i.e. the 'sensing' (interactive openness) and 'memory' (self-referentiality) of an organization. These characteristics and related knowledge flows enable the capability to learn and co-evolve with the broader business ecosystem. This book also presents consistency/intentionality platforms and evolution models that help to evaluate the learning and renewal capability of an organization and to improve its enabling infrastructure. The living composition model has multiple implications for managers, consultants, and academics. It helps to identify the characteristics and development potential of the enabling structures of an organization, and to evaluate various development methods and activities in a larger framework. The sources of organizational learning and renewal are diverse and difficult to understand. This book shows how organizational learning and renewal can be explained by the theory of self-producing systems. D.Sc. Marjatta Maula is a professor of knowledge and information management at the Institute of Business Information Management, Tampere University of Technology, Finland. She holds a D.Sc. (Economics and Business Administration) degree in international business from The Helsinki School of Economics, and a M.Sc. degree in computer sciences from The University of Tampere, Finland. Earlier she has been an associate research professor at the Copenhagen Business School, a management consultant in several international management consulting firms, a technology and development director, and a systems manager and analyst. She has written about multinational knowledge-intensive firms as learning and evolving systems, change processes, knowledge management, and ICT.
