False Love from the Author: Stan Katz. The quest for true love appeals to us all — and yet the real thing is painfully elusive. According to Dr. Stan Katz, men and women today don't really know what to look for in a mate, or even how to love once we find one. No one teaches us. What's more, the images of love we absorb from society, the media, and popular culture are superficial and misleading. The result is false love — relationships based on illusions of what we think love should be rather than an appreciation of what it is. False Love and Other Romantic Illusions is about the mistakes we all make in love, why we make them, and how we can correct them. Using in-depth case histories, Dr. Katz traces the course of false love from early childhood conditioning to adolescent crushes to adult relationships. He shows how our first misconceptions about love lead to mistakes, and how mistakes become patterns. But the patterns of false love can be broken, and Dr. Katz points the way, with a practical, far-reaching program for achieving and sustaining true love. This timely, intelligent book will alter not only the way we seek intimate relationships, but the way we live them.

The Power Of Images In Paul from the Author: Raymond F. Collins. In his letters to the early Christian communities, the apostle Paul left for Christians of all time an array of powerful images: from the pain of a thorn in the flesh to the tenderness of a nursing mother for her children, from the competition on an athletic field to the growth of an agricultural field. In The Power of Images in Paul, Raymond Collins explores how Paul uses the ordinary to describe what is extraordinary, how Paul skillfully uses a wide range of metaphors as a means of both persuasion and clarification. But this book is more than an analysis of Paul’s images themselves. Collins also examines how Paul deliberately draws from secular as well as religious and biblical themes in order to draw a culturally diverse audience into relationship with Christ. Entering Paul’s world with Collins, readers will better appreciate Paul’s use of metaphor and, more important, be persuaded as was Paul’s original audience of God’s unfailing love in Christ.

Images In Mind from the Author: Deborah Steiner. In archaic and classical Greece, statues played a constant role in people's religious, political, economic, aesthetic, and mental lives. Evidence of many kinds demonstrates that ancient Greeks thought about--and interacted with--statues in ways very different from our own. This book recovers ancient thinking about statues by approaching them through contemporary literary sources. It not only shows that ancient viewers conceived of images as more operative than aesthetic, but additionally reveals how poets and philosophers found in sculpture a practice ''good to think with.'' Deborah Tarn Steiner considers how Greek authors used images to ponder the relation of a copy to an original and of external appearance to inner reality. For these writers, a sculpture could straddle life and death, encode desire, or occasion reflection on their own act of producing a text. Many of the same sources also reveal how thinking about statues was reflected in the objects' everyday treatment. Viewing representations of gods and heroes as vessels hosting a living force, worshippers ritually washed, clothed, and fed them in order to elicit the numinous presence within. By reading the plastic and verbal sources together, this book offers new insights into classical texts while illuminating the practices surrounding the design, manufacture, and deployment of ancient images. Its argument that images are properly objects of cultural and social--rather than purely aesthetic--study will attract art historians, cultural historians, and anthropologists, as well as classicists.

Images Of Beauty from the Author: Dr. H. Lawrence Zillmer. As a university professor, Dr. Zillmer has authored many books and periodicals about the truth Jesus brought into our world. We must now return to that truth for our salvation. Political correctness, passing as progressivism, has shorn the life blood from the Jesus Message. (45) As the citizens of the United States must return to the principles of our founding fathers, so we must fight this great evil by returning to the gospel truth Jesus brought into this world. Jesus said, “You shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free.” To that end this work is humbly dedicated.

At the Images of Empire colloquium held in Sheffield in 1990, an international team of scholars met to explore some of the conflicting images generated by the Roman Empire. The articles reflect interests as diverse as those of the scholars themselves: Roman history and archaeology, Jewish Studies, Dead Sea Scrolls, New Testament and Patristics are all represented. All are focused on a single theme, the importance of which is increasingly recognized, not only for the historian, but for everyone interested in the political complexities of our post-imperial world.

Unstable Images from the Author: Brenda Johnson Clay. The subject of colonialism encompasses a multitude of analytic concerns about the nature and extent of political controls, economic inequalities, and social hierarchies. Underlying the varied conditions of power and subordination are the diverse, sometimes contested representations of human difference that motivate, support, or question colonial practices and projects. Unstable Images concentrates a critical gaze on this discursive side of colonialism through close readings of a series of Western texts on the people of New Ireland from the 1870s to the 1930s. When the status of New Ireland was granted, New Britain region changed from precolonial to German control and finally to a League of Nations mandated by Australian administration.
