Like Water from the Author: Crystal M.. “Momma is like water. You know how you see rocks in a stream or a river, and over time, before you know it, the water has worn the rock down so that it can make its way where it wants to go? That’s Momma.” Struck by her brother’s description of their mother as water inspired author Crystal M.’s book Like Water, an engaging and sometimes painful reflection about her mother, motherhood, and family with snippets and insights on childrearing and child psychology. Crystal and her siblings grew up under the harsh, strict, oppressive, and tyrannical rule of their mother and her violent mood swings. Living under her thumb, Crystal grew up sheltered, vulnerable, and somewhat unprepared for the evils of real life. But the lessons her mother gave them, sometimes uncompromisingly harsh, has saved her and made her hardy, capable to weather all the bad things that came her way.

Sexual Revolutions In Cuba from the Author: Carrie Hamilton. In Sexual Revolutions in Cuba Carrie Hamilton delves into the relationship between passion and politics in revolutionary Cuba to present a comprehensive history of sexuality on the island from the triumph of the Revolution in 1959 into the twenty-first century. Drawing on an unused body of oral history interviews as well as press accounts, literary works, and other published sources, Hamilton pushes beyond official government rhetoric and explores how the wider changes initiated by the Revolution have affected the sexual lives of Cuban citizens. She foregrounds the memories and emotions of ordinary Cubans and compares these experiences with changing policies and wider social, political, and economic developments to reveal the complex dynamic between sexual desire and repression in revolutionary Cuba. Showing how revolutionary and prerevolutionary values coexist in a potent and sometimes contradictory mix, Hamilton addresses changing patterns in heterosexual relations, competing views of masculinity and femininity, same-sex relationships and homophobia, AIDS, sexual violence, interracial relationships, and sexual tourism. Hamilton's examination of sexual experiences across generations and social groups demonstrates that sexual politics have been integral to the construction of a new revolutionary Cuban society.

Light Of Tina Dark Fantasy Horror from the Author: Richard Stooker. Twenty-one years later, Paul Templeton still did not know whether in his old dream he rapes and murders his sister. The rapist killer escapes. Nightmares torture Paul. If he didn't kill Tina, how can he witness it, dreaming he sees it happen in a mirror? Now a beautiful young woman moves into the neighbor, reminding Paul of Tina? Is the killer after her too? Though Paul never touched Tina in an unbrotherly way, he loves her with an unbrotherly love. During her life, and for the twenty-one years since her grisly death. Now a Thai businessman and his beautiful daughter Khamnah move into Paul's neighborhood. Khamnah reminds Paul so much of Tina it hurts him. She too shines with the light of The World Behind. The transcendant spiritual universe where Tina lives on. The gleaming light of Khamnah's personality and heart help Paul to ignore the skeptical gibes of the psychiatrist Jack Harrison. But he can't forget the threat of the slasher rapist the police are looking for. Ten women in the past five months. M.O. similar to Tina's killer twenty-one years ago. Paul fears for Khamnah's life. He dreads the possibility of history repeating itself. That night he dreams again, but he does not see Tina's face in the mirror. Instead, Khamnah sits brushing her hair -- until the killer enters. This short story is NOT for you if you: 1. Freak out at references to "deviant" sexuality. 2. Can not handle a description of nongratuitous rape and murder. 3. Are looking for explicit erotica to feed your own deviant fantasies. 4. Don't wish to consider the borderlines between fantasy and reality, emotional obsession and psychic powers. 5. Prefer stories about 'normal' people. (Though, at a time when 50 Shades of Grey is outselling Harry Potter in England, I for one wonder who really is normal.) Light of Tina is a short story I think of as horror, but others might use such terms as dark fantasy, paranormal, or urban fantasy.

And when pain happens, it can seem as if God is asleep, indifferent to our struggles. In God Can’t Sleep, Chinchen tackles challenging questions: Where is God when life hurts? How long will I stay in darkness? When the world is so full of bad people, why do I have to suffer? The Black Deal from the Author: Freddie R. Burnett. Madam Nancy Mae Webster is a successful black nightclub and restaurant owner during the 50s and 60s Jim-Crow South. Due to her heroin addiction and a heroin overdose her lifes story becomes the body of the story as it is told by the conscious of her incarcerated son, while he waits to see her in the waiting room at the hospital. Her white-like skin and her sons very black complexion complicate everything. The great differences in their complexions are the results of her being raped and left for dead by two black men when she is an innocent young farm girl in West Tennessee. The son, Joel Webster, is the hopeful protagonist of his own story, while he is the despised antagonist in the story of his mothers trouble-ridden life. The two dramatic tales have him as a convict visiting the hospital to see his dying mother, while guarded by two sets of alternating prison guards one good and the other one bad. He tries to escape from his own impending death from jailhouse hit men because he witnesses two guards beating a black inmate to death in his jail cell and they want him dead where he can't testify against them. His and his mothers world are split in two black and white worlds that create tension and friction between family members. There are the two uncles Tom and Pete that add suspense to his every thought as he recalls his dying mothers life from her innocent childhood to her reprehensible demise at forty-one years old. Joel Webster is born into a life of rejection, hatred, and violence because of his black skin and being the son of one of the two black men that raped his mother and his uncles had killed for doing it. After much painful recalling a beautiful black woman that looks white, and his mothers double life as she passes for white in a bigoted society, and the rich white man that she loves and he loves her, he meets Bobby Lucky. He tells a different side of Nancys life and his own life and his wife is ready to kick him out and his mother threatens to disinherit him from the familys fortune if he doesnt dump his Negro mistress. He repents and begs Joel for forgiveness for separating him from his mother when he is younger. He befriends Joel and works to help him get out of jail. He tells Joel everything that has happened to Nancy in the white world where she lives in a fine mansion with her heroin addiction and her servants that she struggles to conceal her true identity from while he is in reform school and jail. Joel is arrested for a robbery that he doesnt commit. Joels life story is told in the present time of the early 70s when the civil-right struggles are in full-bloom and hes in the protests. Drugs and riotous living invade the black community like a wave of cold air and he sees the devastating effects of it in many of those around him. Nancys best friend, Helen Bond, sheds many tears while Bobby Lucky tells of Nancys heroin addiction and her betrayal. Nancy only wants to become a schoolteacher and have a family but life gives her everything but what she wants. She befriends the wrong person and it destroys her. Helen Bond serves her heroin when she is at her lowest point or what she thinks is her lowest point until the heroin hooks her. Her grandma Tina has long been dead but her pain goes deep into her grave. Her black son is a paradox in her life and he is the only link to her true identity in her white-world existence and she evades him at a great cost to both of their lives. She doesnt want to work as a five-dollar-per-day maid any longer and she takes a job in a house of prostitution as a recruiter. She is soon able to give her son everything he wants but her love and he goes to the reform school to escape his torment on the streets from everyone that knows him because of what his mother does for a living.
