Hundred Years War Vol 3 from the Author: Jonathan Sumption. Divided Houses is a tale of contrasting fortunes. In the last decade of his reign Edward III, a senile, pathetic symbol of England's past conquests, was condemned to see them overrun by the armies of his enemies. When he died, in 1377, he was succeeded by a vulnerable child, who was destined to grow into a neurotic and unstable adult presiding over a divided nation. Meanwhile France entered upon one of the most glittering periods of her medieval history, years of power and ceremony, astonishing artistic creativity and famous warriors making their reputations as far afield as Naples, Hungary and North Africa. Contemporaries in both countries believed that they were living through memorable times: times of great wickedness and great achievement, of collective mediocrity but intense personal heroism, of extremes of wealth and poverty, fortune and failure. At a distance of six centuries, as Jonathan Sumption skilfully and meticulously shows, it is possible to agree with all of these judgments.

The Hundred Years War Volume 1 from the Author: Jonathan Sumption. What history records as the Hundred Years War was in fact a succession of destructive conflicts, separated by tense intervals of truce and dishonest and impermanent peace treaties, and one of the central events in the history of England and France. It laid the foundations of France's national consciousness, even while destroying the prosperity and political preeminence which France had once enjoyed. It formed the nation's institutions, creating the germ of the absolute state of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In England, it brought intense effort and suffering, a powerful tide of patriotism, great fortune succeeded by bankruptcy, disintegration, and utter defeat. The war also brought turmoil and ruin to neighboring Scotland, Germany, Italy, and Spain.

The Hundred Years War Volume 2 from the Author: Jonathan Sumption. A succession of catastrophes in the middle years of the fourteenth century brought France to the brink of destruction. The bankruptcy of the French state and a bitter civil war within the royal family were followed by the defeat and capture of the King of France by the Black Prince at Poitiers. A peasant revolt and a violent revolution in Paris completed the tragedy. In a humiliating treaty of partition France ceded more than a third of its territory to Edward III of England. Not for sixty years would the English again come so close to total victory. Yet the theme of the volume is not destruction, but survival. France's great cities, provincial towns and rural communities resisted where its leaders failed. They withstood the sustained savagery of the soldiers and the free companies of brigands to undo most of Edward III's work in the following generation. England's triumphs proved to be brittle and short-lived. Based on a wide range of contemporary sources, both printed and unprinted, The Hundred Years War, Volume 2: Trial by Fire is the absorbing continuation of Jonathan Sumption's monumental history of the Hundred Years War.

The Americans In The Great War Vol Iii from the Author: Michelin Guides. Vol III of III This final volume deals with the Meuse-Argonne battlefields. The background history goes back in time and gives a brief account of the Argonne campaign of 1792 against the Prussians before coming on to the Great War, covering the 1914-1918 fighting in the next twenty-two pages supported by good maps and battlefield photos. Then follow details of two guided tours round the scenes of the fighting, the first starts from Verdun and takes in Buzancy, Varennes, Vauquois, Clermont-en-Argonne and Sainte Menehould, some 155 km. The fighting at Vauquois is described in detail and the ravaged state of that battlefield is still very evident today. The next trip, 130 km, starts out from Sainte Menehould and goes on to Varennes, Montfaucon, Grandpre, Vienne-le-Chateau, La Gruerie Wood, Le Four de Paris,La Hayte Chevanchee and La Chalade. There are excellent accounts of the fighting in the areas covered by the tours. These three volumes together add up to a good, well illustrated record of the Americans in France.

Hundred Years War Vol 1 from the Author: Jonathan Sumption. 'Compulsively readable' (History), this is the first volume in a series that details the long and violent endeavour of the English to dismember Europe's strongest state, a succession of wars that is one of the seminal chapters in European history. Beginning with the funeral of Charles IV of France in 1328, it follows the Hundred Years War up to the surrender of Calais in 1347. It traces the early humiliations and triumphs of Edward III: the campaigns of Sluys, Crecy and Calais, which first made his name as a war leader and the reputation of his subjects as the most brutally effective warriors of their time. Trial by Battle is an account of the events of a pivotal period in both French and British history, from Wolfson History Prize-winning author and historian Jonathan Sumption. 'A new and immensely impressive history of the war.' Daily Telegraph
