Headed For A Hearse from the Author: Jonathan Latimer. Just days from meeting the reaper, a convicted murderer hires Chicago’s most hard-boiled PI to save his neck—before the executioner can claim it Robert Westland’s death is just around the corner when he finally decides to fight the murder rap that’s sending him to the electric chair. Fingered for his wife’s grisly demise, Westland is in a bind, and his last hope is Bill Crane, a booze-soaked detective who’s as ruthless with a quip as he is when trawling the streets for Chicago’s most brutal criminal element. Crane’s got just a few days to suss out the real killer—someone clever enough to off Westland’s wife and lock her in a room whose only key belongs to Westland himself. Fueled by an abundance of liquor and a habit of bad manners, Crane sets his sights on a cast of oddball characters among whom hides a murderer. But in 1930s Chicago, everyone’s got a secret, and the pressure is on for Crane to separate the dangerous from the truly homicidal before it’s too late.

Of Gods And Monsters from the Author: John T. Soister. While Universal's Dracula and Frankenstein (both 1931) have received the most coverage of any of the studio's genre releases, it is the lesser known films that have long fascinated fans and historians alike. Starting with The Last Warning, a 1929 movie released as both a silent and a talkie, Universal provided a decade of films that entertained audiences and sometimes frustrated critics. Each of Universal's horror, science fiction and "twisted mystery" films receives an in-depth essay for each film. The focus is first on the background to the making of the movie and its place in the Universal catalog. A detailed plot synopsis with critical commentary follows. Filmographic data for the film conclude the entry. Universal's The Shadow short film series is covered in an appendix. Many rare illustrations and movie posters are also included.

Horror And Mystery Photoplay Editions And Magazine Fictionizations from the Author: Thomas Mann. Photoplay editions were usually hardcover reprints of novels that had been made into movies, illustrated with photographs from the film productions. Sometimes they were "fictionized" versions of film scripts, recast in narrative form. Here is an annotated checklist of over 500 horror and mystery photoplay novels and magazine fictionizations, collected over a period of four decades. In an introductory essay the author reflects on the attractions of assembling such a collection, analyzes the social significance and aesthetic content of its books, and draws many surprising inferences from their advertisement, illustrations, and marks of previous ownership. The subsequent catalog is the first survey in the field to extend bibliographical coverage beyond books to movie tie-in magazine stories.

As he struggles to recover some recall, he discovers that the small town he is in holds many secrets. The first thing he has to discover is his own name and after that he needs to know why he is in the town at all. As he discovers these things while dating as many of the attractive girls in town as he can find, he also encounters the evil deacon of the Church of Our Lady of Sophia. His enquiries uncover that the church is not a Catholic church as it sounds to be and Our Lady is the Black Virgin while Sophia is an ancient name of the goddess of Wisdom. After those unexpected translations he is hardly surprised when he discovers that the church worships Lucifer and that he had unknowingly narrowly escaped being sacrificed to the Fallen Angel. Handicapped by his lack of memory he pieces together the history of the town and ultimately comes to the point where he has to, almost reluctantly; uncover the identity of the Black Virgin.
