From Faith To Fun from the Author: Russell Heddendorf. Abraham and Sarah were presented with a paradox when God told them they would have a son in their old age. Paradox in the Old Testament plays an important part in the dialogue between God and the Jews. In the New Testament, paradox is prominent in Jesus' teaching and helps to explain the Christian understanding of salvation. Today paradox arises when religious meaning of traditional culture conflicts with secular meaning of modern culture. Heddendorf argues that a subversive quality in humour gradually replaces traditional values with new cultural meanings. The resulting humour becomes a substitute for faith. 'As this secular humor becomes functional for society, it finds its way into many areas of the culture. This process of secularization in humor moves from faith to fun and, finally, to fun as faith. The result of this secularization could be called a 'fun culture'. Redemption of this culture, Heddendorf asserts, should be a continuing concern of the church.

Living From Faith To Faith from the Author: Dr Gloria Ann Turner. If you are struggling in areas of your life, and it seems like the devil is working overtime to destroy you, let me give you a piece of truth to consider today: Your victory is in the Word of God! In Isaiah 54:17, we see that "no weapon formed against you shall prosper." It is vital that you live in that knowledge. God created you to live victoriously. His Word is your armor! Jesus said, "I give you the keys of the kingdom. Whatever you bind on earth will be bound in heaven; whatever you loose on earth will be loosed in heaven" (Matthew 16:19). Our fight is the good fight of faith in Christ Jesus! I pray that these sermons will enlighten, encourage, and strengthen your faith to trust and pursue God in everything you do. Romans 1:17 reads, "For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith."

Evangelicals And Culture from the Author: Doreen M. Rosman. Nineteenth-century evangelicals have often been dismissed as anti-intellectual and philistine. This book draws on periodicals, memoirs and letters to discover how far this was true of British evangelicals between 1790 and 1833. It examines their leisure pursuits along with their enjoyment of art, music, literature, and study, and concludes that they shared the thought and taste of their contemporaries to a far greater extent than is always acknowledged. What is more, their theology encouraged such activities. Evangelicals regarded recreations which engaged the mind, or which could be pursued within the safety of the home, as more concordant with spirituality than 'sensual' or 'worldly' pleasures. Nevertheless, their faith did militate against culture and learning. Some evangelicals dismissed all non religious pursuits as 'vanity', since their deep-rooted otherworldliness made them suspicious of anything which did not contribute to eternal well-being. A new generation adopted a more rigid attitude to the Bible, which made them unwilling to examine new ideas. In the last resort, even the most cultured evangelicals were unable to reconcile their delight in the arts with their world-denying theology.
