Flexible Product Development from the Author: Preston G. Smith. In this landmark book, Preston Smith attributes the recent decline in innovation to pressure from financial markets that drives management toward rigid development approaches such as phased development processes, Six Sigma, and project office. These processes have unintentionally (but effectively) made changes during development more difficult, disruptive, and expensive, while the need for change continues at an accelerating pace. Flexible Product Development is a hands-on resource that provides the tools and strategies needed to restore flexibility to any organization and remove the obstacles that stand in the way of responsive new product development. Preston Smith introduces approaches that can enhance development process flexibility by creating and maintaining development options, delaying decisions, and, in general, reducing the cost of change. Step-by-step, he explains the basics of flexible product development, provides a broad array of flexibility-enhancing tools, and guides the reader in modifying the organization?s values to embrace this new way of operating.

Managing Product And Service Development Text And Cases from the Author: Stefan Thomke. This text offers a new option for instructors interested in emphasizing a balance between products and services. Managing Product and Service Development is about the managerial aspects critical to conceiving, designing, and developing innovative products and services. The course exposes students to some of the best management practices, tools, and frameworks known today, and introduces new approaches that hold promise for the future. Many texts are either aimed at engineering or marketing specialists and do not adequately address the often difficult general management issues that arise in complex development project. This book does not require training or experience in a technical field but addresses the role of new technologies in product development. In this text students learn about innovation through exploration. All the material has been developed and tested in the MBA and executive education classroom at Harvard Business School. The Instructor’s Manual (IM), as only part of this text’s proven teaching materials, describes an optional student project that complements in-class sessions.

Agile Product Development from the Author: Stefan H. Thomke. As product complexity and the velocity of market change has dramatically increased over the last years, firms find it increasingly difficult to forecast product requirements in their development processes. In this article, we propose to redefine the problem from one of improving forecasting to one of increasing product development agility and thus reduce the need for accurate long-term forecasts. We introduce the notion of development flexibility, show how it can be measured, and present results from an empirical study in integrated circuit development where we found that projects using flexible technologies outperformed projects using inflexible technologies by a factor of 2.2 (in person-months). To provide guidance to managers as to how flexibility can be introduced into their organizations, three major strategies are proposed: First, we can explicitly choose flexible development technologies. Second, we can exploit management approaches that lower the cost of change in our development process. Third, we can make product architectural choices that allow our product to easily accommodate change. Within these strategies, we provide a number of specific suggestions that allow firms to increase their agility and to position themselves to succeed in accelerating and more turbulent markets.

The Value Of Information Updating In New Product Development from the Author: Christian Artmann. Managing uncertainty in new product development projects for improved valuation and decision making is one of the most complex and challenging problems in operations management. It is important for any corporation depending on the success of new products and innovations. This work shows how uncertainty can be handled and partly resolved by conducting an information update during the development process. It is one of the first comprehensive models that combine statistical decision theory in form of Bayesian analysis with a real options framework for projects exposed to different sources of uncertainty. The proposed framework makes an important theoretical contribution in addressing this problem, while at the same time being of significant value to managers who face the difficult task of evaluating and managing complex product development projects.
