A Beautiful Death from the Author: S. T. Haymon. The blast rocked the entire block of flats, awaking Detective Inspector Ben Jurnet from a sleep of exhaustion. Bells, sirens, whoopers – sounds that betokened rescue, the arrival of fire engines, ambulances, the police his brothers – reached him on the morning air. Everything under control at least. Or so he thought. Outside, near the wrecked Rover, a shoe lay on the ground. In it, a foot with an ankle attached. Miriam’s shoe. Miriam’s ankle. Was it all a ghastly mistake, a trap set for the police generally, or for Jurnet in particular, that had by dreadful chance caught the wrong victim? Had political murder arrived in sedate and sensible Angleby, that jewel of East Anglia? Why, in heaven’s name, Miriam? Jurnet’s search for the answer to that question proves to be a journey into his very heart and soul. A Beautiful Death combines all the elements of a page-turning thriller with a moving statement about love, bereavement, grief and renewal.

Mortals And Immortals from the Author: Jean-Pierre Vernant. Jean-Pierre Vernant has profoundly transformed our perceptions of ancient Greece. Published in 1991, this collection of nineteen essays probes deeply into themes of enduring interest-- death, the body, the soul, the individual, and relations between mortals and immortals; the mask, the mirror, the image, and the imagination; the self and the other, and, more broadly, the concept of otherness itself, or "alterity.' "This work will be the definitive Vernant textbook for students and scholars alike in the English-speaking world. . . . Froma Zeitlin is in my view America's foremost expert on the work of Vernant. . . ."--Gregory Nagy, Harvard University "Vernant's work ranges across the entire field of ancient Greek religion, philosophy, and literature and joins exacting philological scholarship to exciting and innovative theoretical paradigms. Not since Jane Harrison and Gilbert Murray has a classicist commanded the attention of non-classicists in the way Vernant has over the last twenty-five years."--Choice

Beautiful Death from the Author: Susan L. Einbinder. When Crusader armies on their way to the Holy Land attacked Jewish communities in the Rhine Valley, many Jews chose suicide over death at the hands of Christian mobs. With their defiant deaths, the medieval Jewish martyr was born. With the literary commemoration of the victims, Jewish martyrology followed. Beautiful Death examines the evolution of a long-neglected corpus of Hebrew poetry, the laments reflecting the specific conditions of Jewish life in northern France. The poems offer insight into everyday life and into the ways medieval French Jews responded to persecution. They also suggest that poetry was used to encourage resistance to intensifying pressures to convert. The educated Jewish elite in northern France was highly acculturated. Their poetry--particularly that emerging from the innovative Tosafist schools--reflects their engagement with the vernacular renaissance unfolding around them, as well as conscious and unconscious absorption of Christian popular beliefs and hagiographical conventions. At the same time, their extraordinary poems signal an increasingly harsh repudiation of Christianity's sacred symbols and beliefs. They reveal a complex relationship to Christian culture as Jews internalized elements of medieval culture even while expressing a powerful revulsion against the forms and beliefs of Christian life. This gracefully written study crosses traditional boundaries of history and literature and of Jewish and general medieval scholarship. Focusing on specific incidents of persecution and the literary commemorations they produced, it offers unique insights into the historical conditions in which these poems were written and performed.
